What is photo metadata?

Photo metadata is information stored alongside an image. Depending on the device and workflow, it can describe when a photo was made, which camera or lens was used, where it was taken, and which software edited it.

Metadata is not the same as visible content. A clean copy can reduce embedded data, while faces, signs, documents, and other details visible in the pixels still need to be handled separately.
