GPS Location Metadata in Photos
Last reviewed: September 1, 2026
How photo geotagging works
When an app has location access and chooses to write it into a file, it can store coordinates in image metadata. This is different from a phone gallery’s own location database or a map grouping inside an account.
Check the actual file
Export and sharing paths can produce different copies. A social-media post, an attachment and a file-transfer workflow can treat a photo differently. Inspect the exact copy you plan to send rather than relying on a general rule about an app.
