How Location Metadata Works on iPhone and Android

Last reviewed: September 16, 2026

Smartphone camera location architecture

Modern smartphones are advanced sensor platforms equipped with high-accuracy GNSS receivers (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou). When you capture a photograph or video, the operating system camera daemon queries the location subsystem to embed coordinates directly into the file header.

However, there is an important distinction between file-level metadata and operating system gallery indexing.

Apple iOS: Photos app versus file metadata

On Apple devices running iOS, the native Photos app uses on-device machine learning to categorize your media by location, date, and faces. The Places map in Apple Photos relies on both the embedded EXIF GPS tags and internal system databases.

When you share a photo using the iOS Share Sheet, Apple provides an Options button at the top of the interface. This menu includes a toggle labeled All Photos Data or Location. If you disable this toggle, iOS attempts to strip location data when sharing via AirDrop or Mail.

However, third-party apps and file management workflows do not always honor this toggle, and exporting photos to a Mac or PC often transfers the original file with complete metadata.

Google Android: Permissions and location tags

On Android devices, camera location access is governed by the ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION system permissions. Camera applications from Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers typically feature an in-app setting labeled Save location or Location tags.

Samsung One UI includes a privacy feature called Private Share and a Share without location toggle in the Gallery app. However, saving the photo to a third-party folder or uploading it via an external file manager often bypasses these safeguards.

How to verify your exported files

Operating system share sheet settings can be confusing and inconsistent across software updates. Rather than trusting system toggles, verify your exported files directly with CleanMyPhoto before sharing them with strangers or uploading them to public channels.
