JPEG vs PNG vs HEIC vs WebP Metadata
Last reviewed: September 1, 2026
Metadata support is format and software dependent
JPEG is widely associated with EXIF and may also carry XMP or IPTC. PNG can contain text chunks and may carry EXIF in modern workflows. HEIC/HEIF and WebP can carry EXIF and XMP in implementations that support it. Export behavior is determined by the software creating the file, not the extension alone.
A practical comparison
Smartphone photos are frequently JPEG or HEIC/HEIF; screenshots are often PNG; WebP is common on the web. Any of these can be worth checking before sharing. CleanMyPhoto creates a JPEG copy for supported image cleaning, so it is not a format-preserving editor.
