Check Video Metadata: Inspect MP4 & QuickTime Atoms

Last reviewed: September 16, 2026

Examine video container metadata safely

Video files often contain extensive technical and contextual data that users never see in a standard media player. Beyond visual resolution and frame rates, modern smartphone cameras write device identifiers, creation and modification timestamps, and GPS coordinates into QuickTime and MP4 user data atoms.

Our video metadata inspector analyzes ISO Base Media File Format containers directly in your browser. It parses the top-level atom hierarchy to detect whether sensitive location or device information is embedded.

Key video metadata fields to look for

When reviewing the output of a video metadata scan, pay particular attention to the following indicators:

  • • Location coordinates: Embedded ISO 6709 coordinate strings or QuickTime location atoms showing exact capture latitude and longitude.
  • • Creation date and time: UTC timestamps that reveal the exact date and minute the recording was initiated.
  • • Device hardware: Manufacturer make and model tags identifying the exact smartphone or camera unit.
  • • Track characteristics: Video and audio encoding formats, bitrates, aspect ratios, and duration metrics.

If sensitive metadata is detected, you can click Clean my video on the homepage to generate a sanitized copy with the metadata atoms removed while preserving the original video stream.
