Remove metadata from a photo before you share it
A photo can carry embedded information in addition to its visible pixels. CleanMyPhoto reads supported EXIF, XMP and IPTC fields locally in your browser, then can create a new JPEG copy from the decoded image.
The original file is not changed. Because the new copy is JPEG, use it when a JPEG export is acceptable and inspect the downloaded copy again before sharing sensitive material.
What photo metadata can contain
Depending on the camera, app and export path, metadata can include dates, camera and lens information, editing software, orientation, author fields, and GPS coordinates. Some proprietary or application-specific data may not be recognized by this scanner.
- • EXIF: camera settings, device details and dates
- • XMP and IPTC: editing, rights and descriptive fields where present
- • GPS: latitude, longitude, altitude or direction where recorded
What remains after metadata cleaning
Visible content is not metadata. Faces, house numbers, documents, screens, reflections and QR codes remain in the pixels. File names are also separate from embedded metadata. Review both the picture and the clean copy.
